Event Registration is approaching for Gen Con. While I may miss Origins this year, I am definitely going to make it to Gen Con; I cannot fathom missing 2 straight years.

Still deciding on the when, but I know what I will be running:

It is time for the Harvest Feast in Winterfell. While the Lords of the great houses are in the south fighting for the King of the North, the situation may be too tempting for others looking to take advantage. Fourth in a series.

AGOT-05, Ever Vigilant
Lady Hornwood has been captured by Roose Bolton's bastard and Vey lands have been raided by Draven soldiers. For generations, Stonewatch has been held by the Vey family. Who will hold it in the future? Fifth in a series.

Depending on what I decide, I may also run 01, 02, and 03 as well...

The Grand Plan or Something...

Work will be letting up soon (hopefully) and I can actually start spending some time in a more creative ways.

We have a Trollhalla member mini-convention coming up we are tentatively calling 'InConTroll' that will be at the Arsenal Game Store/Restaurant in Indianapolis. I will be premiering Part 5, 'Ever Vigilant' during that weekend.

I am hoping to rewrite Part 3, 'Home and Last Hearth' as well.

I have even more miniatures to paint...just have to start setting a quota I guess.

I missed Gen Con this year...I may just plan on running 2 games a day instead of working at the auction in 2012. That will be a hard decision to make though, I love the auction. We shall see.

A Dance with Dragons - a final thought

I finished this thing a few weeks ago - the time it took for me to remember that I finished and then write something here should give you an indication of my thoughts.

As a co-worker told me when she finished the book a few weeks ahead of me - "that is time I will never get back". These are my thoughts exactly.

Now to clarify, there are chapters that are riveting and fun to read. You will get the glimpses of the characters you have been waiting 5 years to read about. You will get a set-up to multiple events and expect a stirring and acceptable resolution - either good or bad - but a freaking resolution nonetheless.

Unfortunately, what you get is even more stalling, even more characters, and even more paragraphs about what foul food the characters are eating. The story does not progress and I became less and less enchanted with the story and the characters I once loved to read about.

10 years to get a finished 4th book (since this was technically part 2 of Book 4) and what do we have to look forward to? An aging author who has lost his mojo and will more than likely never get to the next installment. Honestly, I don't really care anymore - I would just like to see an end. Maybe a 10 page epilogue just to say where the story would have eventually ended if he actually had the time and the drive to finish it.

The real truth I think we will find out in the end is that he has lost his way, written himself in a corner, and has no clue on how to get out.

Just my random thoughts though - what do you think?

So...been busy with the house but I have been reading some other things (Fighting Fantasy books on the Kindle). I have had a Red Wedding moment with Book 5 that has really turned me off from the book.

The realization for me now is the GRR has no intention of moving this story forward...it is drowning in its tedium, dealing with characters I don't care about and taking away the characters that you do care about.

Oh well - the odds of this guy getting Book 6 done anytime soon is pretty far fetched. We will more than likely be left with an unfinished story regardless. He is not getting any younger and 5-10 years between books is not a good thing.

OK - so now I am getting to the point of - what the heck? Is this story going to move forward at all?

As a co-worker said to me after she listened to the audio book - that is time I will never get back. And, I am starting to agree with her.

Without providing spoilers, I cannot go into too many details...but this book now totally reinforces in my head the GRR Martin has lost this story and really does not know what to do or how to finish it.

With that being said - maybe the last 25% is filled with world changing and inspiring events - but I really do not think so.

A Dance with Dragons - Halfway there...

So - I am halfway through the book and I have an Areo Hotah chapter - which pretty much syncs up with the end of 'A Feast for Crows', the 4th book.

That did not take long!!!

I believe Martin's claim all along was that this book ended up being too long so he wanted to divide it in half, but instead of cutting it at the halfway mark, he cut it in half based on the North and the South characters...so I am surprised that it was only halfway through Book 5 that we are already caught up and further backs the notion that Martin took the better part of 10 years to figure out what the heck to do with the story that had gotten away from him...just my opinion though.

So...about 26% throught the book...

There is mention of plenty of Northern characters, much to my delight. We hear about Mors and Hothor Umber (maybe a bit too much info about why Hothor is called the Whoresbane). We also hear about the Boltons and plenty of Freys, along with the mountain clans (Liddle).

We also get a good look at White Harbor and House Manderly, along with mentions regarding the Karstarks, Ryswells, and some others.

Pretty cool stuff - now even more depressed that I had to cancel my plans for Gen Con :(

On the house front - my ceiling will be repaired early next week...woohoo!

Only about 20% through so far (thanks to my kindle for the specific status of my reading) and have to say it is so nice to read about Tyrion, Jon, Dany, and Bran again. It is taking some getting used to in regards to properly fiiting these chapters in context with Feast of Crows chapters, but it is not too distracting.

Will be interesting to see how my stuff in the North plays out...but I am liking what I am reading so far...plenty of stories to play off of for the RPG.

Real Life and Stuff

I am sorry to say that my house decided to crap on me once again (back on May 30 - my birthday), and my insurance has decided that it will not be covered (what a surprise).

I am currently half living out my house and also living with the in-laws. My house needs to get work done and I just cannot justify my trip to Indianapolis this year when my family is still not at home.

My apologies to any and all who signed up for my games. For those that have stuck with me in the past - even more apologies that I won't be there with my new adventure.

I am contacting Gen Con today to cancel my events...this was a hard decision, but I needed to make it.

Of Hornwoods, Freys, Boltons, and Whents...or Blackwoods (Spoilers)

Believe it or not, I have spent alot of time trying to pick families that the PCs and NPCs are directly or indirectly attached to. Some of my decisions were by pure luck, since I started this whole thing when I was just getting started reading the books.

Having completed all the books (as of June 27 - 4 books in Ice and Fire and the 3 short stories for Dunk and Egg), I am now listening to the books on CD. As is normally the case, you pick up much more details on the second (and third) time through.

The following will contain spoilers to the main storyline of Ice and Fire...

Cyrie Umber, of House Hornwood
So - this one was pure luck...I had no clue what would happen to the Hornwood family at the time I chose that family for Lothar's mother. House Hornwood's males have been wiped out in the battles at the end of Book 1, A Game of Thrones. In Book 2, Lady Hornwood comes to Winterfell and both the Umbers and the Manderly's are trying to broker a marriage to take over the Hornwood lands. As it turns out, the Bastard Bolton kidnaps Lady Donella, forces her to marry him, and then leaves her to die in a dungeon. Now the Boltons lay claim to the Hornwood lands. Will Lothar and the Umbers get involved?

With the events of Book 3, and the upcoming events of Book 5, it will be interesting to see what is actually happening in the North as a result of the Bolton involvement in the Red Wedding and its aftermath.

Maester Baelin, of House Frey
Once again - I had no clue of the events in Book 3 and the Red Wedding when I chose Maester Baelin's family. Being raised at the Citadel from a young age and assigned to House Umber, Baelin really holds no allegiance to his blood family. But, this family connection could prove interesting in the near future. Regarding the Red Wedding, I will not go into anymore details...you can easily find that information if you would like to. But, if you have not read Book 3, try to hold off the temptation.

House Whent or House Blackwood
There will be a sub-plot regarding the sisters who married into the Vey and Draven families. I picked House Whent because I wanted a family that was pretty much out of the main storyline. Once I read that Lady Whent had no heirs at all...I figured it was best to change to a family that at least still existed and was not about to be extinct. Extinct would mean no claim to the former Whent lands...a child in House Vey or House Draven would provide that potential heir, and thus, the family would not be extinct.

House Blackwood is a riverlands family that still worships that Old Gods (like the Northerners). They have not bent the knee to the Iron Throne after the Red Wedding, and are the only family of the riverlords that are still fighting. Plus, they have a longstanding feud with another riverlands family (House Bracken) which could always be used as a plot point later.

Character - Brock

Brock was an orphan growing up on the streets of Kings Landing. He did what he had to do to survive, but helped and protected those that were weaker and frequently preyed upon by others. He was eventually caught thieving by the Gold Cloaks and sent to prison. He was offered a choice - lose a hand, or join the Night's Watch.

At Castle Black, Brock had proven to be a skilled with steel as well as his fists. He was assigned to be a ranger in the Night's Watch, said the words, and was stationed at Eastwatch-by-the-Sea. Something sinister was returning to the Haunted Forest, and the men of the Eastwatch began to talk. Rangers had gone missing from Castle Black, and wildling villages were disappearing completely. Some of his brothers decided to abandon their duty, and Brock hesitantly joined them. If the Others were coming, how could a few hundred men stop them at any rate.

On to a small Umber village he and his companions went. At Rohr, they rested for the night...

Playtesting

Happy to have had the chance to playtest the adventure - even in its incomplete state. I have to confess - I am normally someone who has all these grand plans and I end up with a half finished idea by the time Gen Con roles around.

Troll Hoot IV was a fun gathering of friends - new and old. We played 4 different systems over a 2 day period. My 'Feast and Famine' adventure I think was fairly well received. Many opportunities for some King-making (or at least some Lord-making) in this one that were not really available in previous games - the political side of the background was something I was eager to get into.

I have my notes - I know what I want to do - I have my 3 new characters, as well as some new tweaks to the current characters.

And don't forget to celebrate Brock Day in Brockville, where the Brock Ale is being brewed for Lord Brock...maybe.

Quick Update...

Still waiting on Gen Con to place my late added second running of AGOT 04. It has been accepted for consideration, but still waiting for the location to be assigned.

If you have been paying attention to all my recent posts, I have alot planned for '04' - three new families and a few new characters.

I will be play testing the adventure at our upcoming gathering of friends at 'Troll Hoot IV' in Upper Sandusky, Ohio.

Ansel Draven is in ill health and the Draven host that joined with Roose Bolton is lead by his sons, Darvin and Quenton as well as Patrek and Allister from Lonely Spire. It is well known throughout the North that the Blackwood sisters, Willa and Shael, were intended to wed the brothers, Ansel and Patrek. Shael was later betrothed to Derrien Vey instead. Patrek was then matched with a wealthy merchant's daughter from Braavos.

I have reorganized most of the information (Characters, Campaign Logs, NPCs) into separate pages which I think makes things a bit easier in regards to navigation.

In addition to the new 'Timeline' page, I have also added a page to show the Umber Family Tree, which shows the various characters and NPCs in the game.

I am marking anything that has either information from the books or information resulting from my various adventures (01-03) with the 'Spoiler' warning - if you don't want to see information that may affect either my story or the books/TV Series, please do not click on those links.

Episodes 01-03 take place within the events of Book 1, A Game of Thrones.
Episode 04 will be taking place within the events near the beginning of Book 2, A Clash of Kings.

House Vey of Stonewatch

The Skagosi, or stoneborn as they call themselves, are thought of as savages by the rest of Westeros and referred to derisively as Skaggs. They live in caves and mountain fastnesses and ride great shaggy unicorns to war. They are supposedly cannibals as well that eat the hearts and livers of those they slay in battle. They waged a rebellion a hundred years ago that took years to quell.

After this rebellion, the Vey family was granted the previously abandoned keep on the Bay of Seals called 'The Stonewatch'. In the years since, a village has reformed around the old keep. Modest farms have sprouted on the Vey lands while crab and fish are plentiful from the Bay of Seals. The Vey lands are bordered by the Karstarks to the East, the Boltons to the South, and their liege lords the Umbers to the West.

Character - Yori (Liddle)

Yori, of the Liddle Clan - first son of Olvaar.

Ser Rygor fell in battle, but had saved the life of a young clansman named Yori (Liddle). Yori accompanied the Umber group back to Last Hearth and swore an oath to be young Lothar's protector in his father's absence. The two are close and have formed a very strong bond.

Yori has also proven to be an extremely valuable asset to the Umber household. He trains that rangers and huntsmen of the house and also helps Ser Alain with the training of the Umber garrison.

Gen Con 2009 - After con comments

Hello all!

Back from Gen Con and I was quite happy with all my games last weekend.

AGOT-01 Winter is Coming: this game was run on Thursday afternoon and went very well. We had a group of 7 and it was one of the best games I have ever been apart of. Also met Steve and Steven who will hopefully be friends for years to come.

AGOT-02 Fire and Fury (1st session): this was run on Friday afternoon and went fairly well. My apologies for not having play tested the adventure - it still played well enough, but with the lessons learned in this game, I went into the last session a bit wiser.

AGOT-02 Fire and Fury (2nd session): this was run on Saturday morning and Steve and Steven were back playing Lothar and Yori. As I mentioned, this game ran much smoother and I think was very well received.

Thanks to all who played at Gen Con - hope to see you again next year where I will have at least 1 new adventure - part 3 in the series.

Character - Elick Snow

Elick Snow, a young man of 20 years and the bastard son of Hothor Umber.

His father does not pay him much attention, but Lothar has always treated him as a brother. Lothar and Yori have had the most influence on Elick’s life, as the rest of the Umber family seem to ignore him. He is however well known on the streets of Last Hearth where he spends much of his time.

Gen Con 2008: AGOT-01 - 8/15/08

My plans to run the game both Wed and Fri kinda got ruined when we arrived to Indy close to 9PM. One of the guys who showed up for my Friday night game had a ticket for the Wed night game - I apologized profusely, and fortunately, another player had an extra ticket which was given to him. I was able to accomodate an additional player as well - making the party 7 characters. The player adapted Elick to be another bastard born child of the Umber family. Always pays off to have multiple copies of the character sheets.

The game went well and I could not have asked for a better group on the maiden voyage. I will not go into too many details of the adventure - I will post that elsewhere so as not to post any spoilers, but the recomendations from the players regarding the game have been heard and applied.

1. "Yori is too powerful, the entire party could have held back and let him handle all the combat" - yup, I see that and have made some alterations to the character.

2. "Jaery needs some bonuses to her damage" - yup, she has also been updated and she is now set-up to eventually get the 'specialization' feat which will make her an even more effective fighter. I took away some of her defense feats as she is the most armored character in the party and with the armor compatability special ability, she should be able to depend on it.

3. "Baelin needs to have a ranged attack" - yup again, Baelin was pretty much forced to the side when combat occured. Instead of helping him with feats to improve his defense, it can be assumed that he will not be able to stand up to any 'fighter' regardless. I transfered his feats to allow him to use a light crossbow and be more of a support character in combat, beyond his healing.

Campaign Background

The campaign starts from Last Hearth. Located south of the wall and just east of the King's road, it is the northernmost and last major city of the North. The Umber family rules Last Hearth and are stong supporters and bannermen of House Stark. Winterfell is the seat of House Stark, located well to the south and west of Last Hearth along the King's road.

The Wall is a giant wall constructed of ice and magic that denotes the northern border of the Seven Kingdoms. It is seven hundred feet high and wide enough for a dozen armored men to ride abreast and is manned by the Night's Watch. The Watch had built nineteen castles along the Wall thousands of years ago, but now only three are occupied with less than 1,000 men in their ranks that once numbered over 10,000.

Once you say the words and join the Night Watch, a man is bound for life. Once considered an honorable post, most brothers are now former convicted lawbreakers who have been sent to the wall instead of being imprisoned or killed. Others are orphans, fostered children of wildlings, or members of noble families with little chance of inheriting any lands or title. Men who abandon their posts are considered to be dead men - oathbreakers are normally punished by death.

Character - Dorian Shaw

Dorian Shaw is the son of the Ser Alain Shaw, the Master at Arms of Last Hearth. The Shaw family is a minor house in service to the Umbers. Alain Shaw fought with the armies of the North under Eddard Stark and Robert Baratheon on the Trident during Robert's Rebellion. He was knighted on the field.

Dorian has grown up on the training grounds, practicing his martial skills under his father's tutelage with Lothar Umber and Elick Snow. When he is not training with his father, Dorian is usually with Yori, learning the ways of the wilderness from the mountain clansman - hunting and tracking.

Character - Jaery Mormont

Jaery Mormont - Niece to Dacey Mormont (Eldest daughter of Maege Mormont and heir to Bear Island); daughter of Lyra Mormont (3rd daughter of Maege Mormont); fostered to Jon Umber of Last Hearth

Jaery was sent to foster with the Umbers at the age of 10. Born to the family well known for the fighting prowess of its females, Jaery is no different. She began her martial training at an early age and was very eager to foster with the Umbers - a chance to train with a family known to be one of the toughest of noble families of the North.

Character - Lothar Umber

Lothar Umber - Grandson of the Jon Umber (The Greatjon), Lord of Last Hearth; Nephew to Jon Umber (The Smalljon), Heir to Last Hearth; son of Rygor Umber (deceased), second son of the Greatjon.

Ser Rygor died when Lothar was only 5 years old - he had led a party north, allied with members of the Liddle mountain clan (one of the clans on good terms with the Umbers and Starks) to deal with wildlings that got beyond the wall, raiding villages. Rygor fell in battle, but had saved the life of a young clansman named Yori (Liddle). He accompanied the Umber group back to Last Hearth and swore an oath to be young Lothar's protector with his father's absense. The two are close and have formed a very strong bond.

Welcome to whoever you are (or is it whomever?). This site is devoted to my upcoming RPG (role playing game) campaign using the 'A Game of Thrones' d20 system. In the coming weeks I am hoping to post some information regarding my game which will make its debut at Gen Con 2008. I am hoping to post information about characters and other bits and pieces as they come along. We shall see how it all works out.
